Established in 1969, The Weithaga Factory is one of four washing stations of the New Weithaga Farmers Cooperative Society, which also includes Kahindu, Kianderi and Koimbi. Weithaga services over 800 smallholder coffee farmers, producing an average of 100 metric tons of clean coffee every year. These farmers bring their cherry to the factory, where it is sorted before being accepted by the Cherry Clerk.
The coffee industry in Kenya has long been organised around a government-run open auction system. As part of Kenya’s 1933 Coffee Act, this system ensures that higher quality lots fetch a higher price. This makes for stiff competition for the best lots, especially for highly graded AA grade beans, such as the Weithaga AA. Although the grading system is a measure of bean size and not defect tolerance, special attention is usually paid to these higher-priced lots at the processing level, thus contributing to consistency and quality.
